National Geographic magazine marks its 125th anniversary with a special October issue devoted to celebrating the power of photography. Photographers use their cameras as tools of exploration, passports to inner sanctums, instruments for change. Their images are proof that photography matters—now more than ever. The issue looks at how photography has the power to impact our lives by bearing witness, helping to prove fact, giving us insight into each other, revealing unknown places, celebrating wonder and inspiring us to protect our natural world. Check it out here: http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2013/10/power-of-photography/draper-text To complement the release of the issue, National Geographic has also unveiled a new photo blog, "Proof": http://proof.nationalgeographic.com/

In 1898, a small area between Sabie and Crocodile River was designated as a National Wild Animal Reserve, thus making the Kruger National Park Africa's oldest animal sanctuary. It is 450 kilometres long and about 55 kilometres wide and is one of the largest animal parks in the world, with 147 animal species, over 500 bird varieties, and 114 different reptiles. The Kruger Park is divided into three areas. Whilst bush land and mopane trees form the northern half, the wide grass plains of the central region are home to a large number of wild animals. In the lush vegetation of the southern half, that consists mainly of acacia trees and bush land, is the preferred habitat of rhinos, hippos and many other wild animals. The elephant, rhino, African buffalo, lion and leopard make up the so-called 'Big Five' of the Kruger National Park and in spite of its dry climate there is an immense variety of plant life with a rich assortment of trees, bushes, grasses, ferns, climbers and herbaceous plants. Located on the southern bank of the Sabie Rive, the Skukuza Camp is the park's organisational centre and can accommodate over 1000 visitors. In 1902, this location was the base camp for the co-founder of the Kruger National Park, Colonel Stevenson-Hamilton. The camp is situated on the 'Lion Safari Road', one of the five most favoured routes for observing animals in the entire park, and a well maintained road network connects the park's 24 camps with the most interesting sights. On the edge of the park's winding sandy tracks there is often a chance encounter with a prowling hyena and the road itself is popular with rhinos and many other creatures that appear to be determined to be photographed by anxious tourists! The Kruger National Park that was once the Mecca of the Big Game Hunter is now an idyllic paradise of Nature and a veritable Noah's Ark for much of Africa's wildlife.

Just outside the town of Page in the state of Arizona, a narrow and unimpressive entrance leads into the mysterious world of Antelope Canyon. The Antelope Creek River has over the course of thousands of years cut a fascinating canyon into the red sandstone and created a natural work of art, a true celebration of form and colour, unearthly and of amazing beauty. The Grand Staircase has five different vegetation zones and thus boasts a remarkable variety of indigenous trees and plants. It is divided into three vast areas, the Grand Staircase, the Kaiparowits Plateau and the Escalante Canyons. Geographically, Death Valley is a truly remarkable national park and Badwater is the deepest point in the entire western hemisphere. The bizarre landscape of the mysterious Devil´s Cornfield really does seem to have been scorched by the heat of another planet. But it is actually the relatively high salt content of the terrain that is responsible for its strange and desolate landscape. The Capitol Reef National Park is a mighty section of the earth's crust that extends for around a hundred and sixty kilometres. Today, the numerous sediments that are contained within the stone strata are visible as long, colourful ribbons and strips within the rocks of this region. At Yosemite Falls steep rocks tower up more than seven hundred metres and it is the park's highest and most impressive waterfall. The surrounding forests are also attractive but the most famous sight of the region are the nine waterfalls of Yosemite Valley. The Canyon De Chelly is a land full of myth and legend and also a national monument of Native Indian culture in the midst of today's Navajo Indian reservation.

An extensive, scant desert landscape surrounds the Petrified Forest National Park, east of Arizona. Two hundred million years ago this region was a swampland inhabited by various species of dinosaur whose fossilised remains can be found throughout the park. The sight of the magnificent rock formations of Bryce Canyon to the southwest of Utah is a truly breathtaking experience. In their native tongue the region's Paiute Indians once named this remarkable place as, "Red rocks that stand like men in a bowl-shaped canyon". Since the first settlers arrived in Bryce Canyon many have found it difficult to describe this beautiful and unique world of natural stone. The sheer vastness of the region along with its seemingly endless variety of rock formations makes any visit a rewarding and memorable experience. It is from the steep cliffs of New England's coast to the north of the State of Maine that the power of the sea manifests itself and as soon as the mist begins to clear in the Acadia National Park the view reveals the magnificent forests that have made it such a popular sightseeing destination. From September to the end of November, the forests of New England shine out in remarkable and truly amazing colour. Surrounded by the grey limestone of the Muddy Mountains the rocks in the Valley Of Fire, the oldest state park in Nevada, glow with a remarkable intensity. The red rocks do indeed appear to burn in a magical fire that seems to transform them into stone. Mono lake is the greatest crater lake in the world and although it is one of the oldest lakes in North America its water is three times as salty as the sea! Situated in the state of Utah the Arches National Park is one of the most famous national parks in North America and owes its fame to its fantastic sandstone arches. In spite of its comparatively modest size of three hundred square kilometres it boasts one of the most magnificent landscapes in the entire south west of the United States.

National Geographic - Vampire Skeletons Mystery (Documentary) Nowadays, vampires are a mainstay of TV, film and literature, but in medieval Europe they were a terrifyingly real prospect and omens of death and doom. Taking the archaeological discovery of mutilated medieval skeletons buried in the west of Ireland as a starting point, Vampire Skeletons Mystery traces the rise of the vampire from medieval folk terror to 21st-century fantasy. The fear of the undead seems rooted deep in the human psyche. But could a number of skeletons found buried in a quiet field really signal that vampires were once on the loose in Ireland? Using medieval texts alongside cutting-edge forensic science, a team of experts from British and Irish universities explains how these ancient burials fit into a belief system that spanned medieval Europe and still survives in remote rural communities to this day. Broadcast: National Geographic Tuesday 6 March at 9pm No copyright intended, this video is strictly for educational purposes.
